Iron Age I – The Period of the Settlement and Judges

The history of Jerusalem before its conquest by David is shrouded in obscurity. During the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age I, significant changes occurred in the Land of Israel regarding its political, economic, and ethnic structure. These changes took place after the regional powers, the Egyptians and the Hittites, lost their status due to climate upheavals and political turmoil, also related to the invasion of the Sea Peoples, including the Philistines, into the region. During Iron Age I, we witness intensive settlement in the central mountainous region. According to the Bible, at the end of this period, the first king was chosen for Israel, namely Saul, who established his capital on a hill north of Jerusalem, identified today with Tell el-Ful.
